University of Open Knowledge (LM-EXTRAP)
culture pace layer · 2012–ongoing
lifespan: 300 yrs
Class card for the LM-Dawn terminus of the university lineage chain: the form that succeeds both the post-Humboldtian research university (MM-Day; credential- monopoly + knowledge-as-Wissenschaft) and the Bayh-Dole platform-university (DM-Day; IP-extraction-as-platform-rent + tech-transfer-as-mission). The LM form displaces BOTH prior operational grammars simultaneously: credentialing- as-state-monopoly is DISPLACED by open-knowledge-commons coordination (peer- verified contribution graphs, p2p-credential protocols, verifiable portfolios); IP-extraction-as-platform-rent is DISPLACED by cooperative-IP commons (open licenses, copyleft research, defensive-publication networks, commons-based peer production of knowledge artifacts). Structural features of the LM form: (1) Post-credentialism as operational grammar: The university no longer derives legitimacy from a state-chartered degree-granting monopoly (licentia docendi, the medieval Bologna gift, persisting through Humboldt's Wissenschaft-credentialism to Bayh-Dole IP-tenure). Legitimation shifts to verifiable contribution: what you have built, taught, and demonstrated in open practice — assessed by peers, not by an accrediting authority. Adjacency: post-credentialism-network-class (on disk) supplies the p2p-credential protocol substrate. (2) Open pedagogy as coordination form: curriculum designed as a commons — OER (Open Educational Resources), Creative Commons licensing, open-textbooks, open-courseware lineages from MIT OpenCourseWare (2002+) through OpenStax (~10M students/yr 2024) through full open-curriculum networks. The university no longer treats pedagogical content as a proprietary competitive moat; teaching itself becomes a shared infrastructure. (3) Decentralized science integration: The university dissolves its monopoly on legitimate research production. Decentralized-science-platform-class (on disk) institutions — OSF, Lean/Mathlib, IP-NFT cooperative frameworks, Zooniverse distributed citizen-science — become co-equal knowledge-production nodes. The LM university integrates rather than competes with these forms. (4) Slow-knowledge school embedding: The slow-knowledge-school-class (on disk) — Recurse Center model, folk high school revival, atelier-apprenticeship forms — becomes a recognized subsystem within or alongside the open-knowledge university. Deep-time, mentor-witnessed, competence-based learning is no longer marginal. Motor=null definitional: the LM university has no extrinsic telos of Progress (no enrollment-growth mandate, no patent-revenue-maximization OPP, no league- table credentialism spiral). It is constituted by the feedback between open- knowledge commons maintenance and the living competence of those who reproduce the commons — a self-organized criticality form, not a telos-driven machine. Substrate note [STUB-substrate-enum-gap]: The primary substrate of the LM university is [social, semiotic, cognitive] — NOT corporeal (no physical campus monopoly), NOT animate (not ecologically constituted as in rewilding), NOT the absent 'institutional' type (v0.2 gap flagged). The form is primarily incorporeal-semiotic: open licenses, contribution-graph protocols, commons- based knowledge artifacts. Cross-era position: zombie_dependency on MM Westphalian state-credentialing apparatus (degree-granting charters still required for certain professional licensing in transitional LM-Dawn period); adapted_inheritance from both MM Humboldtian form (research-as-Wissenschaft norm, research-university staffing competence pool) and DM Bayh-Dole platform form (IP-infrastructure knowhow, tech-transfer network, spinoff-cultivation practices); sublimation_coupling toward DM Bayh-Dole IP-extraction model (LM form renders IP-rent-seeking passively obsolete in knowledge domains that go open); mutualistic_coupling with DM Wikipedia (DM precedent for open-knowledge commons at scale; symmetric: open-knowledge university feeds Wikipedia's rigor floor; Wikipedia feeds open-university's corpus). All quantitative state-variable values are [EXTRAP]. Framing is [CANON-trend] from Wave-0 LM era definitions and [CANON] from Readings (1996), Slaughter + Rhoades (2004), Smith (1776) on division-of-knowledge labor. v0.2 gap — liveness_fluctuation_tolerance: missing from v0.1 schema. Proxied via coordination_yield_index (primary), self_organized_criticality_proximity, capture_resistance_index, and liveness_temporal_coupling (all in canonical registry §10). v0.2 gap — EmergenceSubtype cooperative_commons: absent from v0.1 enum (only crowdsourced and meritocratic_hierarchy available). LM university instantiates a third form — commons-stewardship emergence — recorded here in description only, not wired on the model.
